Ancient Origins
The original Latin text that became Lorem Ipsum comes from "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written by the Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. This philosophical work explores ethical theory, examining what constitutes the ultimate good in life. The specific sections used are from Book 1, paragraphs 32 and 33, where Cicero discusses hedonism and pain. The original text reads: "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..." which translates roughly to: "Nor is there anyone who loves or pursues pain itself because it is pain..." The irony is palpable: a text about the nature of pleasure and pain became the world's most famous meaningless text. Cicero's exploration of whether pleasure is the highest good has been transformed into placeholder content specifically designed to be ignored. Why Cicero's text? Likely because it was widely available in printing shops of the Renaissance. Classical Latin works were commonly used for type specimens and practice printing. Cicero was one of the most-copied ancient authors, and "De finibus" was a standard educational text. Printers needed long passages of text, and classical literature was freely available. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, is credited with tracing Lorem Ipsum to its Cicero origins in the 1980s. Digital Age
Lorem Ipsum made a seamless transition from print to digital in the 1980s, proving its utility extended beyond traditional publishing. Its adoption in digital tools cemented its position as the universal placeholder text. Aldus PageMaker, released in 1985, included Lorem Ipsum as a feature.
