How much data can a QR code hold?
Maximum capacity is 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes of binary data. However, more data means denser, more complex codes that are harder to scan. For reliable scanning, especially in challenging conditions, keep content under 100-200 characters when possible. Use URL shorteners for long links.
What size should my QR code be?
Minimum scannable size depends on scanning distance. For close scanning (2-3 feet), 2cm × 2cm minimum. For medium distance (6-10 feet), 10cm × 10cm. For distance scanning (billboards), roughly scanning distance divided by 10. Larger is always better for reliability. Test on multiple devices before committing to a size.
Can I customize QR code colors?
Yes, but maintain high contrast. The foreground should always be darker than the background. Black on white is ideal. Dark blue, dark green, or dark brown on white work. Avoid low-contrast combinations that scanners struggle with. Never invert (white on black) unless you've tested extensively. Logos in the center work with high error correction (H level).
Do QR codes expire?
Static QR codes never expire—the data is encoded directly in the image. Dynamic QR codes (using URL shortening services) may expire if the service stops working or the subscription ends. The QR code itself doesn't expire, but the destination it points to can become unavailable. For permanent applications, use direct URLs to content you control.
What's error correction and what level should I use?
Error correction allows QR codes to be read even when partially damaged. Level L recovers 7%, M recovers 15%, Q recovers 25%, H recovers 30%. For digital displays, L is fine. For normal printed materials, use M. For harsh environments or codes with logo overlays, use H. Higher levels create larger codes, so balance reliability against space constraints.
Why won't my QR code scan?
Common issues: too small for the scanning distance, insufficient contrast between light and dark areas, too much data creating a dense complex code, damage or printing defects, glare from glossy surfaces, or poor lighting. Solutions: increase size, use black on white, reduce content length, print on matte surfaces, and ensure adequate lighting.
